Google is experimenting a new television programming Google search service in conjunction with Dish Network.
The service, tests apparently add Google’s Android OS to your TVs box-set. This allows you to use a keyboard to search for what you want to watch on TV. It would then show you your regular Dish Network programming that met the search criteria along side an internet search of sites like Google’s YouTube.
Without any details about the specific implementation, it’s unclear how similar this venture is to the new upcoming TiVo Premiere service that was announced last week.
But the most interesting aspect of report from Wall Street Journal dealt less with the service itself and more with the technology that powers the set-top box. Apparently, portions of Google’s Android OS power the Google-enabled device. While Android has been spotted on other devices like tablets and netbooks or, so-called smartbooks.
This isn’t Google’s first focus into television industry. In 2008, Google AdWords introduced Google TV Ads as a platform for companies to buy airtime in various markets. That project hasn’t been as successful as other Google products, but perhaps a more direct way of approach is embedding search to television would have better results.
Do you think this will open doors for Google to increase its market share in Google Search? or again it will be disappointment for Google?
